Aery - Little Bird Adventure (Xbox One)

My State of Gaming, February 21st, 2020

So, a couple of big things happened to me this week as far as gaming goes. First, the most exciting thing:

Yes, that's a screenshot of my characters list in City of Heroes, a game which I played for the majority of its lifespan before it was unceremoniously shut down by NCSoft in November of 2012. Because of NCSoft's handling of the game itself and its shutdown, I refuse to purchase and/or play other games they run ever since.

People that knew me at the time can probably attest that I did not handle the shutdown very well. I had played since 2005, which was pretty much since the beginning (it started running in 2004.) I

However, unbeknownst to me (and quite a few others) a private server had been running in secret since before the shutdown. It wasn't until mid 2019 that the server was made known by people leaking the source code, and ever since then people have been flocking to the number of different private servers to relive their experiences with the much beloved game.

Of course, it wasn't until Sunday night this week that I found out about this, because nobody tells me anything.

When I found out I was ecstatic... and I think I scared my wife a little. But once I figured out what was what, I had downloaded the Taquila client by the next evening I was revisiting Paragon City with a new character (see picture to the right.)

Currently my wife and I are reliving the glory days on the Homecoming servers, where we've created new versions of our original mains. There's been some pleasant surprises coming back into the game on a private server, namely the new power sets and new archtype that weren't in the game at shutdown (some of the powers were in the works in the Beta servers before the shutdown was announced.) This has led to us reworking our original mains into different archtypes (I'm currently using Mr Aspirin as a Mastermind, and Brie is playing Aidyn as a Sentinel.) But so far it's been great, nostalgic fun. You'll probably see more of our antics here soon.

Of course, that brings me to my second bit of personal gamer news, which is explained largely with the photo below:

Yesterday I got myself a working (mostly) first generation Playstation 3!

Now, I know that the PS3 isn't technically "new" to some of you, but you're talking to a mainly Xbox player who never had the opportunity to get a PS3 when they first came out, and thus missed out on all of the PS3 games from last generation.

Now, with it including a controller and 3 games, for $20 this was a steal, even with the issue of a broken disc drive. The plan is to purchase a new replacement disc drive and upgrade the hard drive in order to download all of the free PS+ games I "purchased" while the program still offered the games and play them that way.

And, since this is a first gen model of the PS3, it's backwards compatible with the original Playstation and Playstation 2 games, which I haven't been able to play ever since my PS2 died via angry kitty. So, all sorts of wins this week.
